Jean-Louis Gampert
(1884-1942)
Swiss painter, engraver, and illustrator, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich before further refining his practice in Knirr’s private studio, and later in Paris under Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier. He produced numerous tapestry cartoons as well as furniture designs. He developed a close friendship with Roger de La Fresnaye, who portrayed him on several occasions. Gampert’s work was moreover deeply influenced by La Fresnaye’s monumental style, itself rooted in Synthetic Cubism. Around 1927, alongside Alexandre Cingria, he taught classes at the École des Pâquis and created the decorative schemes for the church of Corsier. During the 1930s, he became a member of the fine arts section of the nationalist movement Union Nationale. The circumstances under which he met André Groult remain unknown, although the wood engraving created for La Locandiera may have played a role in bringing them together.
