Charles Martin

(1884-1934)

French designer trained at the École des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Julian, he excelled in etching and stencil techniques. He worked in luxury decorative arts, creating perfume bottles, furniture, wallpapers, and posters. He illustrated around twenty books, notably Sports et Divertissements with Erik Satie, and contributed to La Gazette du Bon Ton, Harper’s Bazaar, and Vanity Fair. His refined, joyful style shows the influence of Cubism.
His works are held at the Cooper Hewitt and MoMA in New York, and at the Bibliothèque nationale de France.
