(1877-1943)
Painter, printmaker, illustrator, and master wood engraver, Jean-Émile Laboureur stands among the leading figures of twentieth-century French graphic art. Trained at the Académie Julian and closely associated with Guillaume Apollinaire and Marie Laurencin, he flourished at the heart of Paris’s artistic avant-garde. From 1905 onwards, he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne, and in 1914 André Groult devoted a solo exhibition to his work. He also contributed to La Gazette du Bon Ton.
This creative partnership proved especially fruitful, giving rise to several iconic decorative motifs, including Grand Bouquet, Libellule, Le Marin, and Étoile des mers, in which poetic sensibility, elegant stylisation, and the refined artistry of wood engraving come together in perfect harmony. Celebrated in a major retrospective at the Bibliothèque nationale de France, his work is now held in the collections of the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Bibliothèque nationale de France, and the Musée d’Arts de Nantes.
