George d'Espagnat

(1870-1950)

Post-Impressionist painter, printmaker, and illustrator, Georges d’Espagnat ranks among the leading figures of the French art scene during the first half of the twentieth century. For more than fifty years, his work was exhibited at the foremost Paris Salons, and he was represented by the prestigious Galerie Durand-Ruel et Fils, one of the defining galleries of modern art.
A remarkably prolific artist, producing more than a thousand paintings over the course of his career, d’Espagnat brought his exceptional command of colour and composition to the decorative arts when André Groult commissioned him to create a series of floral designs. This collaboration gave rise to elegantly composed motifs, including Gros Bouquet and Bagatelle, whose rich ornamental character lends itself beautifully to exceptional wallpaper collections. Today, his works are held in major public and private collections from Paris and Madrid to New York.
