LES TORTUES

Small turtles and familiar animals animate this wallpaper with a naïve charm. The artist Miss Lloyd, a regular collaborator of André Groult, expresses here a gentle and spontaneous decorative sensibility.

Constance Llyod dit Miss Llyod

(1873-1968)

Born into a distinguished British family and trained at London’s prestigious Slade School of Fine Art, Constance Lloyd, known as Miss Lloyd, continued her artistic education in Paris. There, she attended the Académie Colarossi, studied by copying the Old Masters at the Louvre alongside Duncan Grant of the Bloomsbury Group, and later refined her practice under André Lhote.
After exhibiting in London and, from 1909 onwards, at the Salon d’Automne, she began collaborating with André Groult in 1911, contributing to the emergence of a remarkably refined decorative language. Her creations, including Quadrillage, Petit Vase, La Pensée, and Les Tortues, reveal a subtle balance between ornamental precision and graphic poetry. Rediscovered through recent scholarship, her work is now held in the collections of Chastleton House in England and the National Library of Wales.
