VIGNE ET TREILLAGE

Designed by André Groult before 1912, this motif adorned the dining room of his Paris apartment. The trellis frames abundant vegetation in a composition reminiscent of Arcadian gardens.

André Groult

(1884-1966)

A leading figure of the decorative arts in the interwar period, André Groult belongs to the generation of designers who gave Art Deco its most refined and intimate expression. Born in Paris in 1884 into a cultivated bourgeois family, he initially pursued scientific studies before turning toward decoration. His marriage to Nicole Poiret, sister of couturier Paul Poiret, encouraged his career. In 1908, they opened a shop on rue d’Anjou. Groult conceived interiors as unified compositions. His style combined precious materials, classical forms, and subtle modern color harmonies. He published hand-printed wallpapers from 1911 and collaborated with the Mobilier National, Beauvais, and the Gobelins. He exhibited internationally and contributed to the Normandie liner. His work is preserved in major institutions. He worked as creator, editor, and orchestrator, collaborating with artists such as Laboureur, Laurencin, and Barbier.
