PALMETTE

This Directoire-style motif combines stars with medallions adorned with palmettes and stylized almond-shaped foliage. Drawn from the vocabulary of classical ornament, it reflects the neoclassical taste that prevailed at the end of the 18th century. Its clarity of line and rhythmic regularity make it a quintessential design of the period.
